Open your page

First, we'll open your default home page in Netscape.
  1. In the Location window, type http://ontrack.ncsu.edu/~xxxx/index.html where xxxx is your User ID. (Your User ID will be given to you.)
  2. Click on File at the top left of the page. Select Edit Page.
  3. Now there are two windows open: Netscape and Composer. In the Composer window, there is a blinking cursor. This is where you will edit your page.
  4. You may edit your page as you would any text document.

Save & preview

Save your file often to your disk or your computer so you won't lose your changes.

To preview your page as it will appear on Netscape, click on the Preview button on the top tool bar, or by selecting Browse Page from the File menu. You must publish your page for others to see your changes.

Publish your new page

Just to be sure we can do it, let's publish your new page and see if it works.

  1. Click on Publish under the File menu, or click on the Publish Button on the toolbar.
  2. A window will appear. Type a new title in. Make sure the HTML Filename is index.html
  3. Under HTTP or FTP Location, type (replace xxxx with your User ID):
    ftp://xxxx@ontrack.ncsu.edu/home/teachers/2001/xxxx/got_html/
  4. Type in your User name (this is your User ID).
  5. Type in your Password.
  6. Click OK.
  7. You should get a message that says "# files were successfully uploaded".
  8. Test it out! You can see if your pages were published by going to the Netscape window and pressing Reload.

Backgrounds

To change your background:

  1. Select Page Color and Properties under the Format menu. Click on the Colors and Background tab. Under Page Colors click on Use custom colors
  2. Click on the button next to the word Background and choose a color.
  3. If you would also like a graphic in the background, click on Use Image under Background Image Type in a URL or filename for your image.
  4. Remember that your text will be hard to read if your background is too complicated. Make sure that the text and link colors show up well.
  5. Click OK.

Making Links

You can create links to other pages or to your own documents, including PowerPoint and Excel files. Make sure that you publish your files along with your web pages.

To create a link:

  1. Click on the Link button on the top tool bar.
  2. Type in some descriptive text about the link in the Link source area.
  3. Enter the link URL in the Link to: area. Make sure that the address starts with "http://" unless it is one of your pages. Here are some example web pages you can link to:
  4. Click OK.

Downloading Pictures

To download a picture from the web, press the RIGHT mouse button and HOLD IT DOWN. Select Save Image As... on the menu that appears. Enter a filename and a location to save the file. The easiest place to save is on your disk in the A: drive.

Making links with pictures

When you add a picture to your page, you can also make it a link. To make a picture link:

  1. Click on the Image button on the top toolbar.
  2. Choose the image you wish to insert.
  3. Click on the Link Tab at the top of the Image Properties window.
  4. Enter the link text and location just like you would for a regular link.
  5. Click OK.

Content

This page is provided to you as a home page in the Girls on Track program. You are welcome to create any content you wish, but think about what you might like to know about someone participating in a program like this. We suggest including your name and email address, and some information about your occupation and your interest in the program.

As a part of this workshop, we want your page to contain the following:

Be sure to publish your page when you're done and...

HAVE FUN!
