Making Web Pages- For Students, by Tiffany Barnes |
|
Open your page
First, we'll open your default home page in Netscape.
- In the Location window, type http://ontrack.ncsu.edu/~xxxx/index.html where xxxx is your User ID. (Your User ID will be given to you.)
- Click on File at the top left of the page. Select Edit Page.
- Now there are two windows open: Netscape and Composer. In the Composer window, there is a blinking cursor. This is where you will edit your page.
- Highlight the words My GoT Homepage and type in a new title.
Publish your new page
Just to be sure we can do it, let's publish your new page and see if it works.
- Click on the Publish under the File menu, or click on the Publish Button on the toolbar.
- A window will appear. Type a new title in. Make sure the HTML Filename is index.html
- Under HTTP or FTP Location, type:
ftp://ontrack.ncsu.edu/home/ms/2001/xxxx/got_html/- Type in your User name (this is your User ID).
- Type in your Password.
- Click OK.
- You should get a message that says "# files were successfully uploaded".
- Test it out! You can see if your pages were published by going to the Netscape window and pressing Reload.
Write Your Reflections
Now it's your turn to tell us how we're doing.
- Of course, you're not Chiquita Banana. So write your FIRST NAME ONLY in place of her name. :) You might want to tell us about your group too, where she told us about the Tropical Fruit Group.
- Write about your GoT experience so far!
- After you write about your first two days, publish your page again.
Go CRAZY!
Guess what? Now you get to explore the web and personalize your page EVEN MORE. The rest of your default page has a few good links, search around! You might want to change your background, add pictures, and add links.
Backgrounds
To change your background:
- Select Page Color and Properties under the Format menu. Click on the Colors and Background tab. Under Page Colors click on Use custom colors
- Click on the button next to the word Background and choose a color.
- If you would also like a graphic in the background, click on Use Image under Background Image Type in a URL or filename for your image.
- Remember that your text will be hard to read if your background is too complicated. Make sure that the text and link colors show up well.
- Click OK.
Making Links
You can create links to other pages or to your own documents, including PowerPoint and Excel files. Make sure that you publish your files along with your web pages.
To create a link:
- Click on the Link button on the top tool bar.
- Type in some descriptive text about the link in the Link source area.
- Enter the link URL in the Link to: area. Make sure that the address starts with "http://" unless it is one of your pages.
- Click OK.
Downloading Pictures
To download a picture from the web, press the RIGHT mouse button and HOLD IT DOWN. Select Save Image As... on the menu that appears. Enter a filename and a location to save the file. The easiest place to save is on your disk in the A: drive.
Making links with pictures
When you add a picture to your page, you can also make it a link. To make a picture link:
- Click on the Image button on the top toolbar.
- Choose the image you wish to insert.
- Click on the Link Tab at the top of the Image Properties window.
- Enter the link text and location just like you would for a regular link.
- Click OK.
Be sure to publish your page when you're done and...
HAVE FUN!
