On Day 1 of the camp, the mathematical investigations will begin with a large group discussion of what life will be like in the Triangle in the year 2020. There will be time for brainstorming and identifying areas of interest for investigation. Population growth is likely to emerge as a major factor influencing many community issues for Wake County.

Wake County population data will be presented in tabular and graphical forms. For example, here is the Wake county population table for 1990s. Students will determine an estimate for the future of population of Wake County,  and share their estimates and methods used to determine their estimates. Mathematics of estimation will be discussed, and predictions given by Wake County officials will be presented and compared with predictions given by mathematical models.
